Current Students

Amanda Hartstein (MS) received her BS degree from the Purdue University Fort Wayne. She is investigating micro-

plastics in Nebraska river sediments.

Karma Doescher (MS) received her BS degree from UNL. Her research focuses on the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Madison Limestone in the Uinta Mountains, UT.

Dana Anderson (BS) is exploring the use of paleoweathering proxies to understanding climate change in the high southern latitudes during the Late Paleozoic Ice Age.

Alumni
  • Ibrahim Al-Khardawi (MS 2014) examined the reservoir geology of the Arab-D Reservoir in the North Rub Al Khali Basin in Saudi Arabia. He now works for Saudi Aramco.

  • Lauren Birgenheier (PhD 2007) evaluated the record of glaciation preserved in deposits of late Paleozoic age that are exposed in eastern Australia. She is now a tenured associate professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Utah.

  • Sebastien Blanchard (PhD 2016) carried out a regional sedimentological and stratigraphic study of the Amsden and Tensleep Formations in the Big Horn Basin, WY. He is now teaching and working in museum outreach in France.

  • Lindsey Bobak (MS 2013) worked on the sedimentology and diagenesis of carbonate sediments forming on the Ross Sea Shelf, Antarctica. She now works as a environmental geoscientist in Ohio.

  • Dan Dunham (MS 2015) examined the processes controlling lithification and porosity distribution in the Neogene succession of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. He now works for an environmental firm in Omaha, NE.

  • Chesney Gilleland (MS 2011) worked on the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Pennsylvanian-Permian System of the Nebraska panhandle. She is currently a senior geologist at Concho in Colorado.

  • Zi Gui (MS 2009) studied the origin of brines in Neogene strata of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica as part of the ANDRILL project. She is now working with Sinopec Inc. USA in Houston, TX.

  • Jesse Koch (PhD 2010) combined stratigraphy, sedimentology, and stable isotope geochemistry to examine the imprint of glaciation during the late Paleozoic on Permian carbonates deposited in the Orogrande Basin, NM. He is now a senior geologist at BP.

  • Ted Matheson (PhD 2019) studied the sedimentology and diagenesis of the Phosphoria Rock Complex in the Bighorn Basin, WY. He is now a NSERC postdoc at Queen's College in Kingston, Ontario.

  • Ryan Mustacato (MS 2019) examined the role of bioturbation in controlling reservoir quality in marine carbonates. He currently works as a geologist at CRH Americas in Kansas City.

  • Lucien Nana Yobo (MS 2014) studied karst development in the Madison Limestone. He is now an ACES Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology & Geophysics at Texas A&M.

  • Jessica Pritchard (MS 2009) studied the sedimentology and stable isotope geochemistry of Early Permian carbonates in Western Australia, with the hopes of shedding some more light on the near-ice demise of the late Paleozoic Ice Age. She is now a senior geologist at Devon Energy Oklahoma City.

  • Mike Rygel (Postdoc 2005-2006) worked on aspects of the stratigraphic record of the late Paleozoic Ice Age in eastern Australia. He is now a professor and head of the Department of Geology at SUNY Potsdam.

  • Katarina Savatic (MS 2020) generated chemical weathering records through the Permo-Triassic extinction in the Bowen Basin, QLD Australia. She is now pursuing a PhD at Northwestern.

  • Eric Schroeder (MS 2007) used isotopic records derived from benthic foraminifera from Shatsky Rise in the northern Pacific Ocean to examine how mid-Maastrichtian environmental, climatic, and biotic changes affected the region. He is now an operations geologist in Houston, TX.

  • Aaron Shultis (PhD 2019) used geochemical proxies to investigate climate change during the late Paleozoic ice age. He is now a lab manager at the University of Toledo.

  • Allen Tevyaw (MS 2019) studied paleoenvironmental changes surrounding the Permian-Triassic extinction, as recorded in the stratigraphic record of eastern Australia. He currently works for a geoengineering tech firm in Rhode Island.

  • Stephanie Thomas (MS 2005) studied the lithostratigraphy and geochemistry of the mid Permian Wandrawandian Siltstone in the Southern Sydney Basin of New South Wales, Australia. She currently works for the advocacy group Public Citizen.

  • Mingyu Yang (PhD 2019) studied patterns and processes of diagenesis in glaciomarine deposits of Antarctica. He is an associate professor in the China University of Geosciences (Wuhan).
